A Peek in the Valley - Hosted by Shanna Lewis Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:05 PM Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 PM
New show: Sunday at Noon
A Peek in the Valley is KWMV’s occasional and eclectic look at people, places and happenings in the Wet Mountain Valley. Each week A Peek In The Valley spotlights someone or something interesting and the show always has a local connection. A Peek In The Valley first aired in October of 2006 and since then we’ve broadcast musical selections by the Custer County High School Choir, local opinions gathered at a US Forest Service Planning meeting, an interview with legendary bluegrass musicians Ron Thomason and Heidi Clare, a look at hay season in the Valley from out in the hay fields, snippets from the very first Shakespearean production in the outdoor amphitheater, and more. You never know what you’ll hear on A Peek In The Valley, but you know it will always be local.
Shanna Lewis is co-station manager for KWMV and host of KWMV’s local program A Peek In The Valley. Her work as an independent radio producer has aired on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday and hourly newscast, Colorado Public Radio-KCFR News, Colorado Matters, KRCC News, Western Skies, and Pulse of the Planet. She is the staff photographer and a reporter for the Wet Mountain Tribune where her work has garnered awards from the Colorado Press Association. Photographs and print stories by Shanna have appeared in the Denver Post, The National Post (Canada), and Colorado Central.
Jim
Remington, host of Celtic and Beyond.
Celtic
and Beyond - Hosted by Jim Remington Monday 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Celtic and Beyond hosted by Jim Remington, focuses on the
traditional instrumental and vocal music of Ireland, Scotland,
Wales, and North America. The show highlights the connection
between Celtic music and American old-timey and bluegrass
music and each week features a band or solo performer in-depth.
Jim provides stories and anecdotes about the music and performers
from his many years of experience listening and performing
this incredible music.
Jim Remington has been involved with traditional Celtic
music for over 25 years. Trips to Ireland in the late seventies
and eighties where he first heard live traditional music,
lead to a love of the music and his studying of traditional
Irish fiddle and guitar styles. Jim studied with a number
of master players as well as studying fiddle and tin whistle
at the Willy Clancy School of Traditional Music in County
Clare, Ireland in 1990 and 2002. Jim played fiddle and guitar
with the Greencastle Band and toured New England with the
band for 10 years as part of the New England Council on
the Arts Touring Program. Two full length recordings where
done during this time and a compilation CD is scheduled
to be released in 2008. Jim has played many sessions of
music in many parts of the world and continues with his
interest and love of vocal and instrumental Celtic music.

One of the best things about living
in a small community is getting to talk to each other – in
person and on the radio! Mountain Messages is the
show where KWMV and your local library team up to
bring birthday and anniversary wishes, reminders about
everyday life, and even a few secrets messages to the
local airwaves. If you’ve been in the Library,
you know it’s a fun place catch up with long lost
friends and hear what’s going on around the community – we
thought we’d take that idea one step further and
let the airwaves be our medium. So here we are leaning
on the fence ready to pass on a few messages from one
neighbor to another. Stop on by to hear what your neighbors
are up to on Mountain Messages – it’s the
place where the community gets together on the radio.
If you have a message to send to someone just send an email to messages@kwmv.org. Be sure to include a short message, your name and phone number or stop by the library and fill out one of the forms available just inside the front door.
Words
on the Wind -
Hosted by Marty Frick
Produced in cooperation with the West Custer County Library Tuesday, Thursday at 1:05 PM
Saturday at 1:00 PM
New show: Tue at 1PM
Poetry is a way to say something complex
in a simple way, which takes a little bit of genius. But
there are many ways to do it well, if one poem doesn’t suit you, keep listening,
the next one might stop you in your tracks. Some people say
if it’s a good poem, it has a kind of stickiness. You
hear it, and a day later, it’s still in your brain.
We offer these poems up because they have given us joy, and
have stuck in our brains. Each week during Words on the Wind
one of your neighbors will read a poem – one of their
own or own by their favorite poets. Marty Frick hosts Words
on the Wind, which is a co-production of KWMV and the West
Custer County Library. Tell us what you think of the poetry
you hear. Send your comments to poetry@kwmv.org.
If you’d
like to read a poem on the radio send an email or talk to
Marty the next time you’re in the library.
Marty
Frick has 40 years of running government organizations
and producing housing under her belt. But she adores
the more playful switch to libraries, where she has worked
as the Director of the West Custer County Library for
9 years. Now she’s delighted to be a part of this
partnership with the community radio station. She says, “If
you put KWMV’s mission statement side by side with
that of the West Custer County Library District, you
would see plenty of similarities – serving up some
mind candy, sense of community, and a balance of serious
with light endeavors. Mountain Messages is a fun way
to greet your friends and neighbors, remind them to pick
up the groceries, wish them a holiday greeting, or just
offer interpersonal giggles.”
